Communication between different human societies functions on the basis of intercultural dialogue: cultural exchange. Mutual cultural interactions and relationships is the theme of Eagles and Doves , an exhibition of works by contemporary Slovak and German artists. The theme of cultural exchange brings along with it complex issues of national identity. The winged words of the title, Eagles and Doves, refer to the influence of these birds on the creation of national symbols. This exhibition is being held on the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Goethe Institut in Bratislava and is a product of its collaboration with Kunsthalle Bratislava.
Conventionally, cultural exchange is both celebrated and denounced. Here ideas of the purity of national culture collide with a discussion of the positive and negative aspects of multicultural mingling. This heated debate is quite as topical in Germany, which has many years’ experience of the coexistence of different cultures, as in Slovakia, where this theme is relatively new. Can we identify positively with the nation without those nationalistic and xenophobic deposits which dominate the contemporary discussion on patriotism? How do the construction of national myths and the rewriting of history impact upon this? Today, when there is an economic and migratory reality that is supra-national, is it really still necessary to put people in boxes marked according to nationality?
Contemporary art can respond to these difficult questions with a broad overview, humorously, playfully, and in an open form. Eagles and Doves is attempting to provide a space for a free and interactive perception of these issues through the medium of art. Seeking and finding traditions, cliches, parodies and play, this exhibition is a place for all those who feel that it matters what kind of society they live in.
